A Community Seed Library

It all start with a seed.

Strong little thing full of hope and purpose!

I’m a believer in seed saving and growing from seeds.

Reasons to become a seed nerd:

  • Seeds are easy to save but check out my seed bible at the end of the post when you have doubts.

  • Seeds grow in abundance. Let one lettuce go to seed and see how many seeds you get (about 1 million?). You will have enough for a few years and to share with the whole neighbourhood.

  • Seeds are cheap to buy - free to swap - or ask any gardening friend, I’m sure they will be more than happy to help you out!

  • The seeds saved from your garden or the neighbour’s garden are adapted to this growing environment.

  • Start a collection!

To spread the love of seeds, I made a Community Seed Library!

What’s a Community Seed Library?

It’s a box (in this case) where people can take seeds, leave some or both! Easy and free!

I bought a second hand box, painted it with little veggies and writings. I made the tabs out of a shoe box. I filled it up with my excess seeds. Now it’s going to live at Ipswich Good Food Group, a volunteer run food coop in Ipswich.

I recommend reading the Seed Savers’ Handbook. It doesn't only tell you how to grow the plant but also give you the background, usage and sometimes extra stories about it! I love reading it!

There is a great Facebook group to be part of, called Share the Seed Australia. There, like minded gardeners are happy to share or swap their seeds, via post, all around Australia (restrictions applied).

I hope this post got you inspired to look at seeds differently! I’m off to sorting and labelling my excess seeds drying all over my dining room!

Have a great day!

Lis
