What do I plant now?

Hello there!

I will be posting about my April update, even it’s already May! (coming soon!)

Right now, my head is at planting/sowing. Maybe you have one of the calendars I made last year to guide you, maybe you don’t. March/April are the months for planting Cool Season Crops! I’m extending it at ‘beginning of May’ ;)

What did I plant in April?

In April, in South East Queensland, it’s recommended to plant:

  • lettuce (done! I mean they are self-seeded… I did nothing!)

  • carrot (soon)

  • onion (done!)

  • cauliflower and broccoli (it needs cool weather! hard to predict!) (I failed at it last year and I don’t feel like it this year)

  • radish (done!)

  • peas (done! So many peas coming up!)

  • garlic (yes! An entire bed for them!)

  • potato (left one in the ground)

  • beetroot (soon)

  • turnip (no one likes them!)

There is nothing better than fresh peas from the garden. That’s what I learnt last year! So this year, almost all my vertical gardening space is dedicated to peas! Peas that I saved from last year on top of that! Here are my tips for growing peas.

I’m hoping some peas make it to the kitchen this time! Haha!

What do I plant in May?

In May, in South East Queensland, it’s recommended to plant:

  • radish

  • silverbeet

  • beetroot

  • carrot

  • lettuce

  • cabbage

I did plant cabbages in April already but I shall plant some more. It’s an easy crop to grow and there are many ways to use it in the kitchen. I used in cabbage in stir fry with other veggies or by itself with a bit of mustard. I also make sauerkraut, fermented cabbage! The trick to store it longer is to wrap it in a damp towel, in a plastic bag, in the fridge, but I prefer fermenting it!

This month, I will be planting carrots and lots of different kinds of beetroots. I got the seeds from the Seed Collection website, I’m excited, I received them today via mail! Beetroots - Red Devil / Chioggia / Cylindra. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Stay tuned!

Happy Gardening!
